Untzasy – Insufflation

An auspicious debut album by an emerging artist from the Tbilisi/NYC axis, Insufflation is a personal statement from Untzasy that reflects his core interests from contemporary club sounds to their roots in punk, post-punk, industrial and EBM. Dense noisescapes permeate the pieces and set the mood throughout: dark, grungy, and decidedly left-of-center, a familiar link to the barely-controlled experiments of the early pioneers. He finds his sweet spot somewhere between dangerous dungeon synth and bassbin wreckers, sometimes in the same track, as battering breakbeats rise out of sound bath-intensity segments of corrosive industrial noise. Vague terrain between extremes is employed for rhythmic subterfuges, with new percussive figures emerging from within the noise floor to further propel bodies towards the dance floor. Working very much as a unified piece, outliers like the savage kick fills of ‘Spiky Meadows’, the insectoid, twitching percussion of ‘Breaking’ or the proper early 80s palette of ‘Caustious Phase’ – like Crash Course in Science minus vocals but missing nothing – reach outwards while keeping the crushing pressure intact
